ALPACA AND MERINO WOOL

Alpaca wool comes from the South America alpaca – a relative of the camel – and is harvested every two years. Alpacas live high up in the Andes, where temperatures are high during the day but plunge at night, and millennia of adaptation to their environment have given them a coat that compensates for extreme temperatures at both ends of the scale. Unlike sheep's wool, alpaca hair is hollow and therefore extremely light. The air trapped in the hairs gives it its amazing ability to balance out temperatures. Alpaca is smooth, fine and soft. Because it is one of the few animal hairs to contain no lanolin – which can harbour allergens – it is recommended for people with wool allergies. The alpaca has more natural colours (over 20 shades) than any other animal with a coat suitable for weaving into luxury fabrics.

Merino wool is shorn from merino sheep. This special breed originated in Spain, but nowadays it is more likely to be found in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and South America. The wool is shorn from the sheep by hand once a year in spring. Merino is the finest and softest sheep’s wool of them all, and despite being relatively light it is fabulously warm. The individual fibres are heavily crimped, lightweight and highly elastic. You will never be too hot or too cold with one of our felted merino wool blankets, but just right.
